Review: Kensington KeyFolio (iPad 2) August 21, 2011 No Comments

If you’ve ever wanted the convenience of an iPad, and the keyboard of an netbook, the Kensington KeyFolio is the case for you! Not only does this case protect your iPad, but incorporates a Bluetooth wireless keyboard for effortless typing.

Pros:

  • The built-in Bluetooth keyboard features an awesome chicklet design, similar to the Apple wireless keyboard. This makes typing simple and comfortable.
  • The exterior of the case features a nice, soft touch texture.
  • You can use your iPad in a landscape or portrait position when using the KeyFolio case. This is nice if you use apps like Pages that work in portrait or landscape positions.
  • The keyboard has integrated iPad-specific buttons. An example of this is the lock key, that locks your iPad’s screen.
Cons:
  • The KeyFolio adds a ton of bulk to your iPad 2. This is bad for anyone who likes to travel light or wants to bring their iPad to class.
  • The keyboard isn’t removable. I would like to see this added to future KeyFolio cases.
  • This case tends to stain easily. Even though the stains can be easily removed with soapy water, this is unacceptable for an expensive case.
  • The KeyFolio costs $99.99. To me, this is too much for an iPad case. I would like to see this case retail for $50 or less.
  • Currently, you can only purchase one color of the KeyFolio case. I wish that Kensington would offer more color choices.
Overall, I think that this case is a little overpriced. If Kensington knocked $50 off of the retail price, I would highly recommend this case. For now, I would turn to the cheaper alternatives on eBay. I would like to thank Kensington for sending this case out for review.

App Review: Final Freeway (Universal) August 5, 2011 No Comments

If you liked the classic 90′s game “Outrun”, you will love Final Freeway. Final Freeway is an excellent third-person “retro” racing game for the iPad and iPhone. This game is supported on all devices running iOS 3.2 or higher.   This universal app is only $.99 in the iTunes App Store.

When you first launch Final Freeway, you will notice the game’s slightly pixelated graphics. This gives the game a retro (think early 90′s arcade) feel. You can choose between two difficulties: Normal and Expert. When you choose “Expert”, you will notice that the game gets substantially harder with more traffic and less time to complete the selected track.  The different play modes include Time Trial, where you choose your own track, and Shuffled Course, where the game chooses a track for you.  There are also several simply-designed race tracks to choose from, taking you from cities to forests.

Once you start a race you will notice that the controls are pretty simple: to drive, hold down the gas pedal button, and to brake, press the brake pedal button. Tilting your device will steer the car. When you begin driving, look towards the top of the screen, where you will see your speed and how much time you have left. Your time will increase as you reach checkpoints. The simplicity of the game controls makes it perfect even for young age groups.  If you are looking for a realistic racing game, this game isn’t for you!  Final Freeway is meant to be your basic non-competitive and non-serious arcade game.  With each race lasting only a few minutes, this game is for the fast-paced retro racer enthusiast.

I think this game is well worth $.99, mainly because of the smooth controls and fun, classic feel. Final Freeway has never felt laggy and has always maintained a high frame rate. The classic feel to this game comes from it’s simple graphics and extremely simple concept: get to the finish line. The fact that you can choose the background music that is playing–preloaded songs or even songs from your iOS device’s music library–makes this game even more enjoyable. The main downfall of this game is that you can only drive one car which appears to be a red Ferrari F50. Overall, I think this game deserves a solid A.

App Review: Reckless Getaway (Universal) July 24, 2011 No Comments

Do you like fast paced, arcade style racing games? If so, you’ll love Reckless Getaway! Reckless Getaway’s objective is simple: Get away from the police. Each level starts off with the driver robbing a bank, then it’s up to you to evade the police. Read the rest of this review to find out if Reckless Getaway is for you.

Pros:

  • I’m a huge fan of the slightly cartoony graphics that Reckless Getaway offers.
  • Reckless Getaway offers 17 different levels. This is sure to keep you entertained for hours on end.
  • I love how Reckless Getaway is played. When playing, you view your car and the rest of the highway from a bird’s-eye view.
  • The controls are simple–your car automatically accelerates while you steer using the left and right arrows on the side of the screen.
  • Reckless Getaway has cool “power-ups” for your car. For instance, if you get the speed power-up,  you get a temporary speed boost.
  • Reckless Racing is a universal app, this means that it will run on any iOS device.
Cons:
  • Reckless Getaway costs $2.99 in the iTunes App Store. I think this is a bit expensive for a simple racing game.
  • Currently, you can only choose from one car. I would like to see the ability to choose from a variety of cars.
  • Reckless Getaway dosen’t have online multiplayer, I would like to see this added in a future update.
Overall, I think Reckless Racing is a solid game from Pixel Bite Games. I am going to give this app a 8/10. Buy this app in the iTunes app store.

Review: Luxmo Cassette Case July 8, 2011 No Comments

The Luxmo Cassette case is an awesome gift idea for anyone with an iPhone 4 that likes music. While the case’s  somewhat awkward design makes the iPhone  appear “chunky”, it does add a ton of personalization to your phone. I would like to thank Luxmo for sending this case out to me for review.

Pros:

  • The style of the Cassette case adds a lot of personalization to your phone. This case is sure to make your iPhone stand out from the crowd.
  • Because of the strong silicone material that this case is made of, the Cassette case adds a ton of grip to your phone.
  • The Cassette case provides a decent amount of protection to your phone. This is because the case has extra silicone on the corners.

Cons:

  • A small part of the back of your iPhone is exposed, thereby creating the potential for scratches. This is because Luxmo tried to make the case look like a cassette by cutting out the “tape reel” on the back of the case.
  • Because the case is made from silicone, it often catches lint when kept in your pocket.
  • The dock connector isn’t cut out of the bottom area of the device.
